When an individual is not yet ready to file a claim, the VA's Intent to File a Claim's process allows more time to prepare as well as protection of the earliest possible effective date for any benefits from a claim.

Knowing how to file a disability claim with the VA is crucial to establish service connected disabilities, diseases, or injuries that were incurred in or aggravated by military service and gain compensation for them.

The Benefits Delivery at Discharge program allows service members to apply for disability compensation benefits between 180 to 90 days prior to separation. This timeframe allows the VA to schedule exams, review service treatment records, and evaluation the claim before separation.

After submitting a claim, it would be nice to just sit back and wait patiently while the wheels start to move.

Unfortunately, this often isn't the case and ongoing monitoring and checking on the status of an application is vital to assure it's continued and timely progression in the process.

In order for a Veteran to receive disability compensation, they first have to establish that they have a disability from their military service. Once an eligible condition is identified, the level of disability given will range from 0% to 100%, depending on how much it interferes with normal life functions.

Just a little bit of extra information for your perusal.
