General Discharge
This is a standard discharge awarded to Veterans who are satisfactory in their service but fell short of expectations in some areas. This could be due to an incident of misconduct, failure to adapt to a particular environment or group, or other reasons. However, the positive aspects of the service member's conduct and duty usually outweigh the negatives. They also receive access to all benefits under the VA except for GI Bill education benefits.
Law for Veterans: A general discharge can limit a Veteran's access to certain benefits, such as the GI Bill; a service member/Veteran cannot reenlist; and it could affect future employment, but it depends on the reason for their discharge (what is listed on their DD214). However, Veterans can still qualify for other important benefits, including:
-
Service connected compensation
-
Health care, such as Tricare's Continued Health Care Benefit Program
-
Disability compensation
-
VA pension
-
And home loans
